WORKING WITH FAMILIES TO CREATE AN EFFECTIVE CARE TEAM

1 CE Credit Offered

This one-hour educational program was designed to help participants understand the impact of Alzheimer’s and related dementia disorders, combined with the dynamics of family and how that impacts decision-making. Drawing on 30 years of experience in the field of dementia care, Amy Matthews will discuss the process families go through, from consideration of care to placement into a long-term care setting. Together, we’ll identify hidden barriers based on our own cultural and personal views of aging, placement, and family roles in caregiving. We’ll define who the majority of caregivers are and, finally, identify and brainstorm ways to help families adjust to the move and actively engage families in the care team.

Learning objectives:

  • Describe 3 ways in which caregivers’ notions of Alzheimer’s, aging and placement affect how they interact with families.
  • Define who the caregivers are, the decision-making process to placement, and 3 factors that affect the decisionmaking process.
  • List 3 ways to help families with the adjustment to placement.
